dotCMS Product Update – Fall 2021
By Abby Schachter
dotCMS’s Fall 2021 product update webinar will have you rejoicing.
Let’s just say life will get a whole lot easier for business owners, marketers, developers, and content authors looking to streamline and simplify content and translation processes in 2022.
Before diving into updates, the dotCMS team opened their discussion with some major news. They’ve been acquired by an investment firm.
Why is this so exciting? The additional support will likely accelerate the team’s road map when it comes to delivering key upgrades/new features. In other words, this is only the beginning.
Will Ezell, dotCMS Chief Technology Officer, took over the screen and kicked off the update to reiterate the company standards by mentioning their foremost goal – to continuously deliver value to clients.
Their plan is to provide clients with easy-to-use, cost-effective updates for their tools that will simultaneously and effortlessly future-proof businesses.
What did dotCMS do in 2021?
Here are some of the stand out additions made in the past year:
- Inline editing
- Pub/sub auto-scaling clustering
- NoCode page builder (no need to create container templates).
- Files Metadata cache
- GraphQL Cache & GraphQL Playground
- Java 11
- SOC2 Certification for Cloud
What can we expect from the latest dotCMS update?
Below are the 4 core pillars that were the basis of the latest update.
More cloud based
They wanted to expand even more into cloud territory, so users could have more flexibility with content and databases
Hybrid content management
Everything is API first but dotCMS wanted to add more support, so while everything can be sliced and diced, the platform can still support traditional content management like page building and pushing things through workflow etc.
No code/ low code
The goal here is that you don’t need a Computer Science degree, or full-time developers to create pages on your site.
With a primary focus on end user experience.
dotCMS products update
Content pallet with drag and drop
The visual layout makes managing your page and content much more streamlined. Rather than clicking, searching, and locating components/images, you’ll have them in full-view and be able to drag, and drop whatever it is that particular container needs. Whether it’s a new banner image or a specific product.
“This really speeds up the process of building pages, because it allows for instant creation.” Says Ezell of the user-friendly addition.
Importing with bundles using dotCMS command line
You’ll now be able to import in bundles (a bundle holds content type, files, etc.)
What does this mean?
Basically, you create a ‘bundle’ of objects within your git repository. The command line allows you to push your content types and multilingual files/languages to the interface. This is where you can store them in a Git repo, which you’ll then be able to push to dotCMS instances, as they change.
The best part is that dotCMS uses deterministic identifiers, which calculates where each batch lives on site within dotCMS.
This means you can use command line interface to build your base then push all of the code that is important to your implementations across environments without conflict. You heard us right, publishing between those environments will not conflict. This is because you’ll be able to build the pipeline to save code within a Git repository.
Unlimited fields in content
The idea is that by storing content with JSON, you’ll be able to store any/all content, so users can rely on a global cloud-based database. In laymen terms: you have unlimited space!
Additional agile improvements
- Content listing with thumbnails
- Option to change default language from UI (you’ll automatically be asked a preference)
- Secure password generator
- Improved content listing screen
- Story block content editor (release date tba)
- Moving away from Gradle to Maven (a Java standard, as it allows more flexibility)
- Improved content search
There you have it, the dotCMS Fall update is full of promising capabilities and the best part is it’s all user-focused. Not only that, the team let it slip that they have even more innovative changes/solutions in the works for 2022 and we are ready for it!
